As one of the founders of the arts and crafts movement, designer William Morris's (1834–96) influence on generations of artists is well documented. In reaction to the great "machine of commercial tyranny" he promoted handcrafted items as well as a "democracy of art." His friends included the architect Philip Webb, Pre-Raphaelites Dante Gabriel Rossetti and Sir Edward Burne-Jones, and the painter Ford Madox Brown, who, among others, formed a creative group at Morris's home.
