On May 13, 1985, Philadelphia attracted worldwide attention when a standoff between the police and a "back to nature" group called MOVE came to a deadly conclusion when a police helicopter dropped an incendiary device on a rooftop bunker at the group's residence. The resulting fire was allowed to burn, killing 11 people, including women and children, while also destroying more than 60 homes in the neighborhood.
