With its burnished imagery and distinctive premise, this Depression-era story begins promisingly but dissolves into a warm puddle of nostalgia. Second-grader Reuben and his parents are happy living in Ambler, Oklahoma, where oil drilling rigs dot the prairie like "big iron grasshopper[s]."
