Gr 5-8 Lawson beautifully re-creates life in 1910 British Columbia through the eyes of the 13-year-old daughter of Swedish immigrants. Karin lives in the soon-to-become-defunct town of Donald, high in the mountains. It is a railroad town, and an average annual snowfall in excess of 30 feet makes life exciting, as well as treacherous for the men who toil on the railroad.
