This TIME-branded sesquicentennial coffee-table book is handsome, but there's not enough going on inside. The focus is resolutely old-fashioned: the Civil War as a military conflict, with little reference to social or moral contexts. "Great generals" receive individual attention, either via extensive profiles or in captioned images within particular battle chapters.
