Divided into six parts, this reference work aims to collect the most pertinent materials on terrorism but falls short of its assigned task. Following a brief introduction, Atkins launches into a 32-page chronology covering the 1894-1992 period. Unfortunately, only two entries (Sadi Carnot's assassination in Lyons in 1894 and Archduke Ferdinand's assassination in Sarajevo in 1914) are listed before 1931. A host of materials on Africa and Asia is left out (e.g., the many assassinations in South Africa during the Boer War; the wholesale terrorism of the Bolsheviks in Russia). What is listed focuses on the 1970s and the 1980s and concentrates overwhelmingly on the Middle East and Latin America.
