This dramatization of Olsen's autobiographical short story portrays her moving relationship with her daughter from the time she was abandoned by her husband when the baby was only a year old to her daughter's late teens. Viewers see the gradual diminishment of the mother's emotions as she attempts to survive during the Great Depression through a second marriage, the child's critical illness, and the arrival of younger siblings and the ultimate cumulative effect on the daughter's personality.
