Gr 5-7 Dinah Bell is a child seamstress in an African-American family suffering from the horrid working conditions in Chicago in 1886. Her father has been arrested for being a labor organizer and her mother has lost an arm to the machines. Their one-room flat houses three families, including Olive and Ben, Austrian immigrants.
