Editors Ellen Datlow and Terri Windling asked their writers “to take a long, hard look at fairy-tale villains.” The fifteen resulting fairy tales and poems are compelling, starting with Delia Sherman’s “Wizard’s Apprentice,” in which a grumpy but not altogether evil wizard saves a boy from his unhappy home. Neil Gaiman’s “Observing the Formalities” is inspired by the fairies in Sleeping Beauty.
