Spare prose outlines John Harrison's forty-year quest to determine longitude on a moving ship. Rejecting the scientific thoughts of the day (the early eighteenth century), which centered on astronomy and mathematics as the keys to calculation, Harrison believed a unique timepiece would solve the puzzle.
