Everyone knows that "cat plays fiddle-i-fee" and "pig plays griffy, griffy," but why? As with Down by the Station (rev. 11/99), Hillenbrand imaginatively interprets a traditional song. The lyrics ("I had a cat and my cat pleased me") serve, with minimal changes, as the cumulative text, and the mixed-media illustrations reveal the story. Over the course of nine months, a farming couple carry out their chores—which include feeding their animals "under yonder tree"—while they wait for their baby to be born.
