Going to work with Mom, an environmental entomologist, is always adventurous for the narrator and his little brother, Leo. They get to see all kinds of bugs, from robber flies ("They carry their food with their feet") to dung beetles ("They eat animal poop!"). Best of all is Max, a Madagascar cockroach, as "big as a bite-sized candy bar" that "hisses like a snake when he is mad." Mom wisely keeps Max in a glass tank, and the two boys always cover it after they feed him. That is, until the day the lab is rededicated as the Ruby L. Gold Nature Center.
