Gordon's debut, Sacrifice of Isaac (LJ 3/15/95), was a demanding, brilliantly written thriller that didn't completely work but set a new standard for books of this type. His new novel is somewhat less demanding (though powerful historical and political issues still surface) and somewhat less brilliantly written (though there's some fine prose), but it is far more engrossing than most other books you'll read this summer.
