Anne is a smart girl in a place she never wanted to be-a Texas home for unwed mothers. It is 1967, and at that time a young lady who finds herself in the family way has very few options. Anne is sure she is smarter than the other girls and will walk away from the experience, not thinking twice about the baby she leaves behind. Why It Is for Us: We know better. Anne's narrative begins with humorous, sarcastic, observations of the home and its residents and ends with the heartbreaking moment when she must give her baby up for adoption.
