Sculptor Louise Bourgeois is right to insist that art must speak for itself without information about the creator's personal history to illuminate its meaning. But how lucky for the authors of this book that she was willing to talk about her own history and artistic roots—and how lucky for readers that her life story includes such complex yet accessible characters, settings, and events.
