This resource appears to be the first to provide a detailed look at the accomplishments of African American scientists. As Carey writes in the preface, "[B]lack scientists seem to be undervalued by American society in general and by the African American community in particular." Indeed, when perusing well-known reference sources like Contemporary Black Biography and Who's Who Among African Americans, it is much easier to find biographical information about basketball players and rappers than it is to find any information about black scientists.
