Gr 5-9 Wilkes, who works with the UN Refugee Agency (UNHCR) in Syria, juxtaposes stories from refugees with summaries of Iraq's recent history. She does not minimize the brutality of Saddam Hussein and his political supporters from his ascendancy to power in 1979 until his downfall. However, most of the book is devoted to the aftermath of the U.S.-led invasion in March 2003.
