Lila lives by night. Yearning for a sun she must never see, she snacks on "sun-kissed" raisins and treasures a "sun bag" of things she imagines can transport her to a sunlit beach. She's homeschooled, and her only close friends, who have yet to be glimpsed by her family, always leave at dawn when Lila goes to bed.
